RELIEVED OR RELIEVED FROM

Once a Janaaza (Funeral) passed by the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and on seeing it he remarked, “Mustareehun (Relieved) or Mustaraahum Minhu (Relieved from).” His companions around him on hearing these words were somewhat perplexed as they did not understand what the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam was saying. Upon their request for clarity he Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa sallam replied: “The mayyit is either one who is finally relieved from the trials and tribulations of the world or he is one who the world is finally free from his trials and mischief.”

Our lives are a journey to the hereafter. Either the ride is a smooth sailing one or one with great impediments, perils and troubles. Those who enjoy life and pass through it smoothly do not wish for the journey to end whilst those on the other end of the spectrum dearly and longingly wish for it to end. This latter people are those referred to when the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said that the mayyit was Mustareehum.

For those who face difficulty in their lives sequentially these words of the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam should give them great hope that soon Insha Allah it will be over and then they will reap the great rewards that Allah Ta’ala has reserved for those who face life’s troubles with patience and perseverance. And when they see the great rewards awaiting them then all the troubles of the worldly life would become insignificant and trivial so much so that they would wish they had suffered even more in the world.

And then the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam spoke of the other possible category of the mayyit which is Mustaraahum Minhu- a frightening category should we fall in it as we find ourselves carried to our graves.

Some of us tread and travel through life cautiously always bearing in mind the concept of accountability to Allah Ta’ala whilst there are those who embark on the same journey giving no  or scant regard to this. Its resultant is that at their hands mischief and corruption spread through the land.

The world currently witnesses avalanches of corruption, misery and untold hurt and pain. There is no need to be a rocket scientist to understand that this state of affairs is nothing but the resultant of those who are bent on causing chaos and anarchy of course with sole intentions of financial gain mostly. Very often these advocates of shaytaan work from backstage where the world cannot see their true forms. From behind the scenes they operate spreading their poison. With sugary tongues but hearts of wolves they further their sinister courses until they attain their selfish desires. The adversity of others gives them a sense of joy and they continue in their evil ways relentlessly.

Little do they realise that a day will come when the claws of death will snatch them and they will be no more in an instant.  Little do they realise that in a flash they will stand before Allah Ta’ala and give a detailed account of their lives in His court.

The two categories mentioned above spells either success or failure. How we live and lead our lives will determine the category we fall in. We are the only architects of our destinies. It is now up to us whether we want to be Mustareehun or Mustaraahum Minhu!
